Norman Bowman couldn’t resist making some jokes, including an inside joke or two, when he introduced the 1962 varsity football team for this year’s Richmond High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Early in his June 8 speech in the high school commons area, Bowman said he would share some anecdotes about the ballclub. “Most of them are true,” joked Bowman, a freshman practice squad player on the team. Moments later, Bowman made an inside joke about a friend of his. “If you’re recording this, I know he’s not here tonight, Larry Best, I’m going for his school record on the podium,” he said. Bowman then told retired Richmond News sports editor and Richmond High School alumnus Russ Green to “get ready.” “It’s going to be a while,” he said. The remarks were part of an ongoing private joke between Best and himself about their gift of gab, Bowman explained Wednesday by phone. Turning more serious, Bowman told the ceremony crowd he was “going to try to be very brief.”…
