Sanders wins title; Ivison and Penniston place at state tourney

The Richmond junior joined that group by winning the 157-pound title at the Class 1 state tournament, held Feb. 22-23 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. Sanders went 4-0, winning his first two matches by pin. An 8-3 decision over Adrian’s Michael McCoy in the winner’s-bracket semifinals put him in the title match, where he nabbed a 14-5 major decision over Jeramiah Smith of Summit Christian Academy, a Lee’s Summitbased private school.
Sanders is among 19 Richmond wrestlers to win at least one state title, including those with titles in now-retired divisions, Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) records indicate. That group includes Cody Hogan, Richmond’s boys and girls coach, who won the Class 2 125 title in 2007.
