Richmond boys claim tourney title again
Of Richmond’s three varsity boys games in the 29th annual Lawson Invitational Basketball Tournament, the Spartans saved their best performance for last, according to Richmond coach Kevin Jermain.
After drubbing Penney of Hamilton 74-32 Jan. 10 and downing West Platte 50-40 Jan. 12, the Spartans cruised past Chillicothe 76-57 Jan. 14 at Lawson High School to claim the championship. The victory over Chillicothe was “by far, the best performance we’ve had all year,” Jermain said.
“That was a great team we played. … They’re … well-coached,” he said. “They play under control. Essentially, (they’re) the same team we played last year.”
Jermain was especially impressed with Richmond’s 76-point outburst against Chillicothe’s high-caliber defense. Aggressiveness was key to scoring that many points, particularly aggressiveness at three-point shooting during the first half, when the Spartans sank six treys, he said.
