’Cats pop pads again at team camp
When Orrick began its first summer 8-man football camp for the junior high and varsity programs Monday on the school practice field, Tucker Greer was thrilled to put on a helmet and shoulder pads and engage in some limited hitting.
“It’s fun,” said Greer, who’ll be a junior this fall. “I love football season. … Every year, this is what we wait for. … We build (muscle) in the weight room (for this). … This is why we do track. It’s why we do basketball.”
Greer was among about 26 Bearcats who participated, including a count by this reporter of 17 varsity players – roughly 75 percent of the full squad Orrick varsity coach Kirk Thacker expects when fall sports practices begin in August.
“We’re going to run about 24, 25 (players),” said Thacker, a Richmond High School alumnus.
To Thacker, the first-day turnout was decent.
“It’s better to have more than less. … We are getting some (boys) that need to get some work in,” he said.
