Sanders has ‘good day’ at tourney; boys sweep triangulars
On Jan. 27, Elijah Sanders “had a good day once again,” according to Richmond wrestling coach Cody Hogan.
Sanders’ day was good enough that the senior claimed the 165-pound title at the Highway 13 Throwdown, hosted by Lafayette County of Higginsville.
“He just has to keep his focus going forward the next four weeks and he can set himself up to compete for another state medal,” Hogan stated Sunday via email.
Sanders, the 2023 Class 1 state champion at 157, helped Richmond place second in the boys team standings with 164 points – 22 points behind champion Centralia.
“Centralia has a solid team, as they have had in the past,” Hogan wrote. “It’s always good competing against them.”
The Spartans placed eight grapplers in the top four, including Sanders, as part of their team finish. Daxton McGinnis, Cayden Morris, Madix Hutchings, Ricky Russ and Hayden Happy each placed second.
Declan Cockrum and Gabe Baker each placed third. Tucker Adams placed fourth.
